Rheumatoid Arthritis

A shooting pain in the knee. A burning sensation in the hand. Before you know it, you have rheumatoid arthritis.

Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic inflammation of the joints. Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disease in which the immune system attacks normal tissues as if they were invading antibodies. Rheumatoid arthritis also causes inflammation of the tissues around the joints and other organs of the body. The hands and feet are the most affected areas of rheumatoid arthritis although it can also affect any joint lined by a membrane. Rheumatoid arthritis is referred to as a systematic illness and sometimes called rheumatoid disease.

Rheumatoid arthritis manifests itself over a period of a few months. However, for some, the disease appears overnight. Accelerated onset of rheumatoid arthritis does not mean the individual is at greater risk of the progression of the disease. Rheumatoid arthritis can lasts for years without symptoms. But rheumatoid arthritis is an illness that progresses and has the potential to cause joint destrution and functional disability. Usually, patients suffer cycles from severe to light symptoms. In terms of statistics, rheumatoid arthritis is three times more common in women than in men. It also besets people of all races equally. Rheumatoid arthritis can begin at any age but most often start in the early forties.

What causes rheumatoid arthritis? The truth is, its cause is still unknown. Viruses, bacteria, and fungi have long been suspected but none has been proven to be the cause. The cause of rheumatoid arthritis has been the focus of different research activities. There are some scientists who believe that the tendency to develop rheumatoid arthritis may be genetically inherited while others believe that certain factors in the environment might elicit the immune system to attack the body’s own tissue components. This attack results to the inflammation in various organs such as lungs or eyes.

Researchers have also found that environmental factors may also play a role in the cause of rheumatoid arthritis. In fact, scientists reported that smoking tobacco increases risk in the development of rheumatoid arthritis.

The symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis depend on the degree of tissue inflammation. Rheumatoid arthritis is said to be active if the body tissues are inflammed. When the tissue inflammation subsides, rheumatoid arthritis is said to be in remission. Remissions may happen spontaneously or with treatment and can last for weeks, months, even years. During active rheumatoid arthritis, symptoms are felt. Symptoms may include fatigue, lack of appetite, low grade fever, and muscles and joint aches. Muscles and joint stiffness are usually felt during mornings and after a period of inactivity. During relapses (from inactivity to activity) of rheumatoid arthritis, joints become red, swollen, painful, and tender. This happens because the tissue lining of the joints become inflamed which results in the excess production of joint fluids.

Multiple joints are usually inflamed in symmetrical pattern and the joints of both hands and wrists are often affected. Simple tasks such as turning the door knob and opening the jars can be painful. Rheumatoid arthritis can also affect the joint responsible for the tightening of vocal cords to change the tone of the voice although rarely. But when this happens, it can cause hoarseness of the voice.

As mentioned before, rheumatoid arthritis is a systematic disease which can affect organs and areas of the body other than the joints. Sjorgen’s syndrome is the inflammation of the glands of the eyes and mouth which causes dryness. Rheumatoid inflammation of the lung lining can cause chest pains because the lung tissue itself is inflamed and nodules of inflammation also develop within the lungs. Rheumatoid arthritis can also reduce the number of red blood cells which can result to anemia and white blood cells which can result to increase risk of infections. A rare, serious complication of rheumatoid arthritis is blood vessel inflammation which can impair blood supply to tissues and lead to death of tissues.

A rheumatologist is a doctor who specializes in arthritis and other related diseases. The rheumatologist reviews the history of symptoms, examines the joints, and the other parts of the body for the inflammation. The diagnosis is usually based on the pattern of symptoms, the distribution of the inflamed joints, and the blood and x-rays obtained.

Until now, there is no known cure for rheumatoid arthritis. Reducing joint inflammation and pain, maximizing joint function, and preventing joint destruction is the current goal in treating rheumatoid arthritis. Early medical intervention has been found to improve outcomes in treatment. Optimal treatment includes combination of medications, joint strengthening exercises, joint protection, and patient education. Treatment is customized according to many factors such as disease activity, types of joints involved, general health, age, and occupation. But treatment is most successful when there is close cooperation between the doctor and the patient.

The Sticky Facts About Minor Wound Care

(NC)-You probably think you know all the facts when it comes to the topic of minor wound care - if you cut your finger, just dab a tissue on it and you’re ready to go! Unfortunately it is not as simple as that. Minor wounds deserve special treatment in order to heal most efficiently and minimize the appearance of scars. So before you peel off that bandage make sure you know the difference between the facts and the misconceptions on minor wound care.

Misconception: It is best to let a minor wound heal over with a scab.

Fact: Scabs actually impede the healing process by creating a barrier between healthy skin cells. The cells have to work their way under the scab in order to form new tissue and heal. Scabs can also be easily torn or scratched, causing re-injury.

Misconception: It is best to let a wound “breathe” or air out.

Fact: The best way to protect a wound is to cover it with a bandage until fully healed. Bandages that absorb a wounds fluid and maintain a natural moisture balance are ideal for healing and enables skin cells to migrate together to form new tissue.

Misconception: It is best to leave a wound uncovered.

Fact: Covering a wound with bandages is essential to wound care: a bandage provides extra cushioning and protection from any re-injury that may occur, as well as preventing exposure to water, germs and dirt.

With Canadians’ safety in mind, a variety of advanced care products have been created to treat all minor wounds, including BAND-AID® Brand Hurt-Free™ Antiseptic Wash - a cleanser featuring an anesthetic to help ease the throbbing of minor wounds - and BAND-AID® Brand Water Block Plus™ Finger-Wrap - designed to stay on fingers when wet. For more information on first care contact the BAND-AID® Brand website at www.bandaid.com.

Life 101 For the Young and Young at Heart! Book Excerpt

Lesson 1.
Category
Well Being
Plan to do this.
Stop blaming others for your shortcomings and failings in life.
Why should you do this?
What ever happened in the past is not a prediction of what will happen in the future. Take control of you, your thoughts, and your actions, so you may do something positive about your future life circumstances.
What happened?
There have been situations where people stepped, and even stomped me to the ground, both mentally and physically. It was not until evaluating why this was happening when an epiphany happened, a clarity I never had before; I was allowing these negative people and things to occur in my life. All the time, blaming others for their words and actions, and then the truth hit me like a ton of bricks. If I did not want others to take advantage of me, then I should remove myself from their presence, either mentally or physically. It is hard to say this to someone, more so to children who have no control over their circumstances, but then again, maybe they actually do have control to some extent. Talking to their teachers, extended family, or neighbors, calling the police or child services for help is a start. How do you convey to anyone that he has the power to do anything if he does not have a strong mind and willing heart? Control your life from within yourselfit is that simple. If you do not believe you have control, then remove yourself physically from the situation. If you must remain in a situation, then cut off negative people and their actions in your mind; find a way to drown them out, as if you were tuning out commercials when watching television.

When bonus time had arrived, I overheard our supervisor telling our manager to exclude my job function from the bonus pool by transferring it to another department. Some people are mean spirited, and you cannot help them, just pray for them. I did not receive a bonus that year, allowing our supervisor to receive an even larger bonus. Everyday, as I passed our supervisor in the halls I would repeat this to myself, “You mean absolutely nothing to me, and this is only a stepping stone on the way to a greater life that God has promised me.” I could not change what happened but I could change my response. Convincing myself that it was a learning opportunity, one that would make me more humble, to learn not to react negatively to others, to learn how to ignore some people and things, and to look forward to a better future. Take this truth to the next step, and you release blame and not allow it to consume your life by dwelling on its negativity but go on to take control of your life and actions to make you a better person.
How do you do this?
Changing the blame from them to me by questioning myself as to what I was doing to deserve this. Thinking it must be something I did. When I answered the question, I realized I was not doing anything. Therein laid the problem of who was responsible. Questioning, allowed me to evaluate other options I could use to change my circumstances. The options were to remove myself from the situation or stick to it but change my perspective. Instead of hoping for people or the circumstances to change, which were unreliable anyway, take the steps necessary to circumvent the problem. Never try to change a person. Offering suggestions may help, but ultimately I have control over my destiny, rather than the molds others have set for me.

Lesson 58.

Goals
Plan to do this.
Success is the best revenge!
Why should you do this?
To the naysayer, to all those who said you wouldn’t amount to anything. To all those who treated you as if you wouldn’t amount to anything. To all those who acted as if you wouldn’t amount to anything. To those who acted as if they were better than you were. To those who thought they were better than you were. To those who mistreated you in anyway. To all those who boasted to you about themselves or their belongings. To all those who thought they were more beautiful or handsome than you were. To those who disrespected you in any form. To anyone who had an ounce of animosity towards you for no apparent reason. To those who got the better of you on a day when you were down and out. To those who kicked you while you were down and out. To those who tried their hardest to make your life a living hell. To those who abused you in any formSUCCEED!
What happened?
We have not reached the pinnacle of success, but we are definitely on our way through the goals we have established for ourselves, and continue to accomplish. In terms of education, family, friends and financial independence, we suppose, we have surpassed many of the individuals we have had the misfortune of meeting and who were previously mentioned. Intuition tells us this has created even more animosity towards us because we did not focus on them but on the goals and dreams, we have planned and have tediously pursued. The purpose of any naysayer, otherwise known as “dream busters,” is to take the spirit from those they encounter, and by not giving them the satisfaction, you are already ahead of the game.
How do you do this?
Whatever goals you have for yourself complete them no matter how stellar the performance might be, if the journey is on the road to success then do so, remembering that no dream is too big for reality. Take those steps in your life to enhance not only who you are as a person but also those around you. When the naysayer, hears of your success, he will have to, if only for a moment, reflect on how his behavior has had an impact on your life and who got the better of the experience. If success is not for you, then let it be for themyour motivation.

What is a Medical Assistant?

What is a Medical Assistant?

Medical assisting is a field full of opportunity for those who enjoy working side by side with physicians and others in a medical office or clinic, regardless of gender. Traditionally, medical assisting has been a profession dominated by women, mostly because of biased counseling and recruiting, and misconceptions about the workforce. A study called “Title IX and Equal Opportunity in Vocational and Technical Education” conducted in June 2002 showed that male students made up less than 14 percent in courses offering medical assisting training in the 12 states surveyed.

However, contrary to certain stereotyped preconceptions and believes male medical assistants are highly valued and respected colleagues. Just like their female counterparts they usually are very much liked by the patients in a modern healthcare facility and it is encouraging to see that recently more and more male medical assistants are beginning to enter into this very rewarding profession!

Medical assisting is a dynamic field that is always changing and always growing. In this day and age where medical assistants are being asked to undertake increasingly complex tasks in either the front or back office there is room for everybody! The common goal of all medical assistants, whether male or female is the care and treatment of patients.

Front office tasks mostly consist of administrative duties, such as answering the phones, scheduling appointments, and assisting patients to fill out their information forms; whereas back office duties consistsof clinical tasks, revolving around patient care, such as taking vital signs, performing simple diagnostic tests, and sterilizing and cleaning equipment and examination rooms.

Student? Studying Long Hours? Read This

My name is Brian Ellis and I work in the insurance industry with qualifications now.

The Qualification Need

My job seemed fairly safe with my firm. I was a good worker, no problems and achieved my targets without any problems. My bosses were obviously happy enough for me to continue working there.

However, due to new requirements being brought in by the regulatory authorities that govern financial type companies, I needed a qualification. It wasn’t concrete, but it seemed fairly certain that to continue to work there I would eventually need the ‘Insurance Foundation Certificate’. Oh dear I need my job and I wasn’t any good at studying I failed miserably at school.

The Course

The certificate study course consisted of two large volumes, levels I and II and a 2 hour exam for each level. Each volume was studied in a classroom once a week for 6 months with homework.

Difficulties Faced

Level I wasn’t too difficult apart from being a very uninteresting subject to study. Think about it, the background of insurance and how it works etc. Level II, however, was going to be the problem. I knew that there was a 70% failure rate for this exam. As soon as I saw the material we had to learn I could see why.

What I did

At the beginning of studying for level I there was a need for me to find out the best way to study due to the large amount of technical data and jargon. I asked my tutor, got books from the library (boring) asked friends and scoured the Internet. What did I learn? Just the same old methods everyone seems to be using. I began to think that there just wasn’t a better way and face up to the fact that I’ll just have to do my best and keep my fingers crossed.

However, one day I saw an ebook on the web called “The Quick Way To Study For Exam Success”. (Available at http://fasterstudy.tripod.com/)

I must admit I was sceptical at first due to all the rubbish I had already seen. However, my gut feeling said try it, after all it was on £5.27.

When I got it I was pleasantly surprised. I found it straight to the point, easy to understand and could apply the method straight away. I decided to test it on learning all the spirits and prices down the local pub. It worked with surprising ease.

My Study Day

Straight away I got out my study volume and following the instructions starting filling up a 100 leaf duplicate book. On the bus to work each day I’d get it out, quickly scan through and that was my study complete. Thank goodness, no more evenings having to stir myself to get out the volume in an attempt to memorise what was there. Ok, I admit it, I didn’t do this everyday, but it didn’t seem to make a lot of difference to the results.

No Revision

Coming up close to the exam the tutor starting blasting us with the words “don’t forget to revise” and we were given test papers in order to give us practice for the exam. Not just to the surprise of my tutor but also myself, I either came first or second in these mock exams. When others were revising, allegedly, I found I didn’t need to, as the way I was studying was just an efficient way of revising anyway.

My Confidence

When the first exam came up we went to the hotel that was booked for us to take the exam. There must have been 150 people there. We were all told to turn our papers over. I found it surprisingly easy and finished in 45 minutes. I had to wait because we weren’t allowed to leave until 60 minutes. I was one of the first 5 to finish. Guess what? I passed.

Concerns

Level II was somewhat different, a lot more difficult. However, I continued to study in the same way.

Before the exam I was a bit more worried whether I would pass due to the publicity of the 70% failure rate. I didn’t find the exam as easy as the first but I was able to answer with confidence.

The Results

During the wait period for the results other staff and myself had found out that very few had passed this time. My heart sank at the news expecting failure. Then it came, I was asked to call personnel for my verbal results. What a sense of elation when I heard the words, “I am pleased to tell you that you have passed. Congratulations.” Yippee. What me? The x school dunce. Thank goodness, no more boring study of the world of insurance.

The Future

This is such a good way to study, I am planning to go to night school and try to get better qualifications. Then I can get a, hopefully, higher paid job.

Make your dream a reality this year

Do you have a dream you would like to accomplish? Whoever you are, I am pretty sure your answer is yes. Okay, now I am going to give you the secret to turn your dream in to a reality. Are you ready? I hope so; such a great tip can make all the difference from being a person of success or just a person full of wishes.

I can almost hear you now, replying: Okay Kenia, can you please tell me the secret and stop all the chi-chat! Since you are begging for it here it is: When you have a dream or goals JUST GET STARTED! Just getting started means that once you are sure of what you want, star walking towards your goal. Do not think about it so much and instead of focusing on the reasons why you cannot do it; focus on how to find a tactic to do it. For example Leyla is a single mom that has a full time job and already feels that there is not enough time during the day to go back to school. Instead of concentrating on the time she does not have, she can spend it thinking about how she can fit school in her daily schedule. She can also cut off some daily activities like watching three hours of TV to just one; maybe she can pay a teenager to watch her kids for an hour or two in her home while she does her homework, or cut off some of her cleaning time and pay someone else to do at least half of it. Perhaps, she can look into those new online education programs, once she learns about it; she enrolls and does most of her school work while her child sleeps in the next room.

Noticed how I mention she enrolled on a distance education program the moment right after she did some research. What happened was that once she did the research, understood how it works, and felt it would be a good decision she jumped right in to it. Now she is back in school pursuing her education and has never being happier. Of course, life is not perfect and she misses having more time for extracurricular activities. However, she understands how important getting an education is. How can she go wrong, If everyday she

Is a step closer towards her degree?

So back to you now, what is your life dream? What is stopping you from pursuing after your objective? How can you overcome obstacles? And last but most importantly GET STARTED! Starting a goal that you will commit to is the first step to becoming a person of success. once you are done with the first step which is often the hardest because is when you will confront your internal fears but, at the same time it will give you a confidence boost necessary to continue your venture. So stop waiting and get started now.

Good Luck!

Ten healthcare fields that can't wait to hire you.

Healthcare is one of the hottest career fields in America today. The aging and retiring of the largest population segment in the country, known as “baby boomers”, has left the healthcare industry racing to find enough employees to fill the void. Advances in medical technology and treatment are causing people to live longer as well. Add the fact many universities and colleges don’t have enough teachers to train new employees; there becomes a ripe market for healthcare careers.

You would be amazed how many types of healthcare careers there are available. This article will discuss three main categories; patient care, non-patient care and operations. We’ll also discuss an amazing new trend with tremendous opportunity - home health.

Three main healthcare jobs in the category of patient care are nursing, medical assisting and dental hygiene.

Nursing consists mainly of direct patient care, but this can take place in a hospital, private doctor’s office, or an institution like a school, ski resort or cruise ship. With additional education or experience, some nurses become nurse managers, shift supervisors, epidemiologists, or counsel to insurance companies and law offices.

Medical assistants primarily provide patient care; performing routine medical functions to free up the time of the doctor. In the past, some of these medical services could only be provided by doctors. Medical assistants administer medication, take vital signs and update medical history.

Dental hygienists perform a similar function to medical assistants, only in a dentist’s office. A hygienist will clean teeth, advise patients on proper dental health and assist dentists with more complex procedures. The outlook for this profession is excellent, with demand far outpacing supply.

Many non-patient care positions also exist in the healthcare field.

Medical coding is one such profession. Medical coders must know terminology and how to read a patient’s chart. They update medical records every time a patient receives healthcare. Some upward mobility is available in management. Many people secure a job as a coder as a way to subsidize further medical education.

Medical office administration is another healthcare position that doesn’t involve patient care. These positions answer phones, coordinate with hospitals and check in/out patients. Moves to office management or medical coding/billing are advancement opportunities. Some people also use this position to further their education.

Healthcare institutions are a large employer of operational positions as well.

Information technology professionals are in strong demand since hospitals utilize state of the art databases to store patient’s medical and billing records. Database administrators and web programmers are a vital part of a hospital’s daily operations.

Medical billing and administration is another key component of healthcare operations. Medical facilities hire for billing positions, collections and administrative support. Special courses / experience are required in medical terminology and billing to obtain these types of jobs.

A rapidly growing sector of healthcare where all of these positions are required is that of home health. In the next six years, Medicare funding of home healthcare is expected to double. Over 7.6 million patients are being treated at home for both long term and short term care. Home healthcare is considered by the medical field and health insurers to be the most cost effective, humane and compassionate method of care.

The shortage of experienced healthcare workers in the United States is creating a boom for people who want to enter this field. There are many career options including positions that involve patient care and those that don’t. The current shortage of employees has created excellent starting salaries, generous benefits and signing bonuses.

Rhythm of Life: “Spiritual Tides”

The Ebb and Flow of Life

Are you overwhelmed with so many activities

you don’t know where to start?

Are you always in a hurry but seem to get nowhere?

Do you find yourself in a state of perpetual over-drive?

Do you constantly feel tired?

Perhaps it’s time to take inventory of your life.

But how?

Here is an excerpt from an incredibly insightful book written in the early 1900’s by an author who has very wise words about this modern day problem. Apparently this problem is not exclusive to our times.

This author makes reference to life being like the ocean’s waves; incoming waves and outflowing waves…

“Through all creation runs the same ebb and flow, ebb and flow, which you can see in the ocean. It is the life-pulse of creation. And there is in it pulse - the long ebb and flow of spring and fall, the short ebb and flow of your own [body]. Just so there are long spiritual spring-flows and fall-ebbs, and there are the short daily ones you can easily feel. And there are infinitely smaller ones of which you are not yet conscious, but to which you subconsciously respond. The spiritual tides of the One-Power flow in all veins. We feel them, and respond, but we as yet only dimly understand.”

“But where we cannot understand we may trust. As I wandered in the wilderness of ‘ups and downs’, as I descended from Transfiguration Mounts to deep Valleys of Shadows, and then asceded again, and yet was never quite lost, I learned more and more how to trust; until in time I came to KNOW that ‘all things work together for good’ to those who work with them.”

“All nature works, and then rests; works and rests. I caught its rhythm and worked and rested with it. When I felt that inertia stealing over me, I rested; and while resting my power recuperated - the tide rose in me.”

I truly believe the secret to a fulfilling life is to find your balance. For this, one of the things you must practice is listening to what your body tells you. If you’re tired, then you may need to take time-out to unwind: read a book, meditate, take an hour off from your hectic schedule and do something relaxing, like taking a bubble bath or a short nap.

When you see your life in synchrony with nature then it is much easier to go with the ebb and flow of everday living.

I hope this helps you to come more in contact with yourself and take the time to smell the roses!
