When you are getting ready to graduate from college you will soon find that there are a variety of different factors that will determine the type of graduation gown that you are going to need to wear. Some of the factors will include such things as the Major obtained, the school colors, and any honors that may have achieved through your college career. The gowns worn for commencement are different throughout all the schools across the globe and the world.
In the United States the graduation gowns that are worn by those that are earning either Bachelors or a Master degree is actually similar to those worn in England. A Bachelor gown is usually worn closed in the front by way of a zipper. They are also either full length or mid calf in length. The Master’s gowns, on the other hand, have sleeves that are oblong in appearance, and although it still hangs down it is square shaped to create the oblong shape. The front of the Masters gowns are actually shaped like an arc that is cut away, and it also has a slit on the wrist opening. However, the rest of the gown is closed.
The overall shape of the graduation gown ties in with the square liripipe that goes along the hoods that are usually worn with the gowns. The Master’s gowns are also designed to wear, they can either be worn open or closed depending on the universities or colleges requirements about graduation. It will also depend on the traditions and rules of the school as well.
Furthermore, the graduation gowns for doctorate can also be designed to have full sleeves instead of the bell shaped sleeves of the standard Bachelor’s gowns that are worn. The Doctorate gowns are also quite similar to that of the Bachelor’s gowns except for the fact that they do have three velvet bands on each sleeve and also velvet facing that runs down the front of the gown. There will also be certain colors that you will be designated with depending on the type of Doctorate degree that you may have obtained. Therefore, the velvet facing of the gown should be tinted to the color chosen for your particular career field.
There is also a wide array of other rules and regulations when it comes to wearing a gown for your own graduation. Most of these rules and regulations will depend on the school that you are graduating from and your chosen career field.

Comfort is an individualized thing, e.g., some people wear contact lenses because they do not relish having to vex about specs. On the other hand, the idea of putting something in their eyes makes some people squeamish and they cannot fathom wearing anything but spectacles.

It is well known that one needs a diploma to be able to further in one’s studies. Graduate diplomas can be acquired online and through various institutions. However, most people have turned to online diplomas. The beauty of this is that, one will acquire the diploma from the comfort of their home. This helps most people especially if they are embarrassed to go back to school and end up not acquiring a better life. “Every girl needs a little black dress.”
“All girls need 3 pairs of party shoes – black, gold and silver.”
Do these sound familiar? People who say these messages aloud sound convinced that these are truths to be lived by. Are they true?
We are all bombarded with messages from people, magazines, radio, TV and the web. Just think about this – all that we know of, the believes we hold, are told to us. Have we examined these messages clearly to see whether they ring true to us? Unfortunately most of the time, messages go right past our conscious mind, our awareness, and goes right into our unconscious mind. This is what happens when we do not pay attention to ads while talking to friends when the TV is on, or when we are listening to music but not paying attention to the lyrics. We pick up a lot of information subconsciously.
So, what does the above mean to image? It means that most people do not know how to choose something that is right for them – for their personality, body type and needs. Companies who tell people what they need are mostly acting from greed – more money to them is the only thing that matters. In essence, they are creating a need that has never existed before. Let’s examine the first phrase, “every girl needs a little black dress”. Some questions to consider –
1. Does every girl look good in a little black dress?
Answer: No! Regardless of the shape and cut of the dress, some girls look terribly pale or ill in black.
2. Does every girl truly have an occasion to wear a little black dress?
Answer: Only a girl who cannot visualize and enjoy colors! What’s stopping you from other colors? If you think you are fat, and are trying to hide it, good luck, because wearing black doesn’t hide it. Flattering a figure has nothing to do with wearing black, but it has to do with how a dress is shaped and cut, what the fabric is made of, and the texture.
3. Do I look good in and need a little black dress?
Only you can answer this. Look at the mirror when you try the dress on. Think about when you will wear it. Don’t wear it when you do not have the occasion for it. Many women buy out of impulse, resulting in closet full of clothing that they do not wear.
I go through these questions and more with those who hire me to help them with their image. You may even go through the same process with the three pairs of shoes too! In fact, go through these questions from now on when you shop – you will make better purchasing decisions in stores, where many salespeople on commission will flatter you even when it is not appropriate.
By the way, as an image consultant, I do not own a little black dress, nor own all three pairs of black, silver and gold fancy shoes.
