A seamless communication environment, where the limitations of time & distance would be eliminated is surely the ultimate objective behind newer inventions in the communication arena. VoIP technology holds great promise as it keeps evolving itself by providing newer applications.
But has VoIP truly arrived and is it completely ready to replace PSTN? That’s the big question. To know the answer we have to peep a little deeper into the technological aspects of them and try to know their real worth.
PSTN (Public Switched Telephone Network): It’s the existing system based on circuit switching, the silent features
Advantages:
1) Well established technology
2) Easy maintenance
3) Hassle free set-up process
4) Simplicity in usage procedures
Disadvantages:
1) Dedicated line required to complete a call
2) Limited scalability
3) Optimum usage of bandwidth not possible
4) Monthly fees applicable for maintenance

VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol): The latest technology on the block, it employs the packet switching method of data transmission leading to an increase in the effective rate of transmission.
Advantages:
1) Concurrent transmission of data, voice & video possible
2) Scalability
3) As the data is sent over the network in compressed format, proper utilization of bandwidth is rendered possible
4) The World Wide Web, which is in the public domain, is used as the backbone of the network, that’s why hardware requirements are a bare minimum.
5) The enhanced efficiency which becomes evident due to the proper utilization of bandwidth leads to massive reduction in the costs incurred per call. Thereby making VoIP a very cheap, yet effective communication tool.
6) Value added services are offered free of cost.
Disadvantages:
1) The quality of sound at times become unpredictable
2) Echo
VoIP is a near perfect technology as the disadvantages associated with it, are to a great extent in the domain of the VoIP service provider, so by choosing a reliable service provider you can hope to eliminate the disadvantages.
Coming back to the big question about choosing in between VoIP & PSTN, as of now it would be advisable to use a hybrid system with VoIP being in the core of the system & PSTN in the periphery. This arrangement would ensure that you get most of both the technologies and would not be dependent on one.
Although the near future would see VoIP completely overtaking the existing system, so by switching over to VoIP now on one hand you will witness massive savings and on the other hand get to have a feel of the technology of the future!!

The History of Voice over Internet Protocol By the end of 2006, Voice over Internet Protocol (VOIP) may account for as much as 25 - 40% of international voice traffic. This prediction is impressive, but it is even more amazing when you consider the relatively short history of voice over internet protocol. It began as a hobby for some people in Israel who were only able to communicate by computer.
Later that year, in 1995, the first company in the history of voice over internet protocol to put a product on the market was Vocaltec. They released Internet Phone Software, which in combination with a home computer, sound card, speakers, microphone and modem allowed users to make a phone call over the internet. However, the people on both ends had to have the same setup, and sound quality was much less than on a normal phone.
In 1998, there were more milestones in the history of voice over internet protocol. Entrepreneurs began to recognize the potential of the technology and soon computer-to-phone and phone-to-phone connections (still using a computer for the transmission) were possible for making voice calls over the internet. The service was available using a phone at a provider’s location in North America only.
It required the users to listen to an advertisement at the beginning and end of each phone call, but in exchange their long distance calls were free. In 1998, less than 1% of voice calls were made using voice over internet protocol.
Businesses began to use VOIP over their intranets to help communicate within their company. But with the introduction of switching equipment in 1998 by 3 manufacturing companies, the history of voice over internet protocol took a turn towards the future.
Now VOIP could become more readily available to users at home instead of at a specific facility belonging to the provider. By the year 2000, more than 3% of voice calls were made over the internet using VOIP.
Today, there are both hardware and software options for those interested in business VOIP and for their personal use. You can purchase hardware that will allow you to use your normal phone handset when making a phone call.
You can buy phones that are VOIP ready and need only an internet broadband connection. Or, you can purchase or download software that will let you use your computer instead of a phone, provided that you have speakers, a microphone, and an appropriate sound card.

This type of scenario occurs to subscribers in almost every country, around the world. Ofcom, the United Kingdoms’ communications regulation department, has created a program which attempts to prevent such unpleasing activity by broadband providers. Ofcom has published a voluntary document of consumer trust, allowing broadband providers to increase consumer trust with this governmental seal of reliance. The program aims to prevent damaging and overly misleading broadband specifications, though it does not extend to the use of exaggerated marketing. This government commission requires providers to allow mystery shopping, fake subscribers inquiring on speed and quality specifications. This ensures that sales departments do not infringe on the document’s convention, preventing the companies from continuing misleading advertising. Ofcom’s new policy also offers a valuable complement to the broadband providers also. The commission allows the companies to allow stricter usage guidelines, and support them through systematic governmental backing. Service Providers are also given the permission to deploy protocol throttles, ceasing activity to such IPs as those of BitTorrent and LimeWire. Due to the voluntary practice involved in this program, signatories who violate the rules of the commission will not be legally penalized, nor monetarily reprimanded.
